The Eyelids

Cannot open the eyes in the morning

      • The eyelids are stuck together; or there is white discharge and the skin feels dry.

      • Gently wash with a soft wet cloth (like a towel) and clean water.

      • Wash a few times until the crusting is gone and the eyes can easily open without pain or discomfort.

If there is a swelling or a lump on the top or bottom of the eyelid (there may also be pain and redness)

        • Wet a soft cloth with warm water, squeeze out the water and hold the soft cloth near the swelling.

        • Do this 3 to 4 times in the day for one week.

        • If after one week, the lump is still there, it will have to be removed by an ophthalmologist.

      Watery eyes

          • In adults or children – If the eyes water a lot and there is discomfort then eye drops will have to be prescribed.

          • Also common in babies up until 6 months of age. The mum can massage from the centre of the eye near the nose, down the nose bone 3 to 4 times a day. The tearing should get less.

          • If it is the same after 2 weeks, then eye drops may need to be prescribed by a healthcare professional.

        Drooping of the eyelid

            • In this condition it is difficult to raise the eyelid (usually one eyelid) when looking up at something; and the eyelid does not close completely when blinking or when one is asleep.

            • An ophthalmologist will be best to advice if treatment is necessary because either the problem could be present since birth; or as a result of an eye injury or a nerve problem.
