General Eye Concerns in Children
Vision problems:
- An eye test can be done from a very young age to prevent a weak or lazy eye or learning difficulties.
- A child may complain of poor sight, seeing double or two images, there may be rapid movement of the eyes in all directions without control &/or the child may be cross eyed or have a squint.
Pupil:
- The pupils may appear closer to the nose and give the impression of a squint or eye turn.
- Sometimes there may also be a slight difference in the size of the 2 pupils.
Squint:
- This is when the eyes appear crossed or both eyes do not focus together. Eye exercise treatment can be started as early as 6 months followed by regular eye check-ups.
- If untreated, the child may develop a weak or lazy eye (amblyopia).
Albinism
- The skin and hair (eyebrows and eyelashes) are white and there is lack of pigment (colour) throughout the entire body or part of the body, usually from birth.
- The vision may be affected where there is a rapid movement of the eyes in all directions.
- There is extreme sensitivity to sunlight and the eyes may appear red.
- The correct treatment can be prescribed following an eye test.
Corneal & Retinal defects; Cataract; Glaucoma
- Children are also at risk to develop these eye conditions.
- At Signature Eyecare, the optometrist is able to assess for this and advise on any concerns &/or required treatment.
